Intermediate Piano Course – Take Your Playing to the Next Level

Moving Beyond the Basics

This intermediate piano course builds technique, repertoire and musicianship for pianists who can read music, play simple pieces hands together and are comfortable with basic scales and chords. It bridges the gap between beginner material and more advanced study by developing fluency, expressive control and a broader stylistic awareness.

Who this course is for

  • Pianists typically with 1–3 years’ experience or the equivalent level of graded exam Grade 2–4.

  • Players who can read both hands in simple textures, play major and minor scales and basic arpeggios, and have some rhythmic confidence.

  • Adults and teens returning to the instrument and younger students ready for more challenging material.

Course aims

  • Improve technical facility: scales, arpeggios, broken chords, independence of hands.

  • Expand repertoire across styles: Classical, Romantic, Baroque, jazz-influenced pieces and contemporary works.

  • Enhance musical expression: phrasing, dynamics, articulation and pedalling.

  • Strengthen sight-reading, aural skills and rhythmic precision.

Technical focus areas

  • Scales and arpeggios: all major and minor scales at a moderate tempo, two-octave arpeggios, hands-together coordination.

  • Voicing and tone production: bringing out melody over accompaniment, controlling touch and dynamic range.

  • Articulation and pedalling: legato vs detached touch, half pedalling, pedalling to enhance harmony without blurring.

  • Syncopation and rhythmic stability: working with metronome, subdividing beats, hands-independent rhythms.

  • Hand independence: practicing counterpoint, Alberti bass, and coordination exercises.
